07-12-11  25 Tech Touchstones of the Past 25 Years

Narrowing down the network industry’s top events from the past 25 years is a little like picking your all-time baseball or football moments – something will always get left out and the second-guessers will come out of the woodwork. So what we have here is what for the moment I think are the Top 25 events that had the most influence on, or will have the most impact in the future of the industry. No you won’t find mention of OSI in here or the changing of CEOs at Microsoft or even the founding of Apple, just to name a few big events, but you will find TCP/IP, Windows, the iPhone and a host of other key happenings that have shaped the past 25 years.

05-11-2011 21st Century Supply Chains Require Demand Driven Rules and Tools

Chad Smith & Carol Ptak, Founding Partners, Demand Driven Institute recently posted on The Manufacturing Blog that “In order to improve flow and achieve more agility throughout supply chains, we must seriously re-examine the conventional materials planning and execution systems. This is not just about speeding up the antiquated rules and tools that we already have but rather causing a fundamental shift in how companies manage their supply chains.”

They further explain DDMRP (Demand Driven MRP). “A multi-echelon demand and supply planning and execution methodology. Multi-echelon means that DDMRP integrates multiple tiers (including the bill of material) in the supply chain in order to provide end to end planning and execution visibility so that flow can be improved and better managed. DDMRP ends the typical bi-modal distribution for the parts/SKU that matter and brings it into the desired alignment.”

04-26-2011 Oracle JD Edwards World and EnterpriseOne Customers Should Plan Your Upgrade Strategy Now

JD Edwards Users: Don’t Wait for Oracle Fusion Applications; Plan Your Upgrade Strategy Now – this is the headline for a Gartner research report from January 2011.

Among their recommendations:

  • Companies using versions of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne prior to 8.11 should start to prepare for the end of standard support in December 2013 and before, to avoid a shortage of skilled resources and issues with nonsupported platform components if done at the last moment.
  • Most midmarket companies using JD Edwards should continue investing in Applications Unlimited, rather than migrate to Oracle Fusion Applications for the next few years. They should analyze Fusion as a potential source for added functionality.
  • Customers using the IBM Blue Stack should decide on further purchases and build contacts to IBM’s support organization.
  • Companies that plan to modify or customize their JD Edwards solution should use Oracle’s Extensibility Guide.

04-06-2011 Sales Order Tax Inclusive Pricing for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne

On April 5th, Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne announced the availability of sales order tax inclusive pricing for Release 9.0.

In some countries, such as China, it is a common business practice to include tax in the sale price of an item. Without this enhancement, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Sales Order Management uses the unit price, exclusive of tax, on the sales order line and then adds tax to determine the total taxed price. With this enhancement, Sales Order Management enables the flexibility to price sales order lines either inclusive or exclusive of tax. The new tax inclusive pricing capability starts with a taxable unit price on the sales order line and then the system decomposes this total taxed price to determine the price without tax and the tax amount. The system stores the tax inclusive price and tax amount in a new table and uses the values in all downstream sales processes.
Using tax inclusive pricing on sales orders enables you to:
• Flexibly define the sales orders that use tax inclusive pricing based on the customer.
• Dynamically enter tax inclusive prices on sales orders.
• View the taxable price, tax amount, extended taxable price, and extended tax amount during sales order entry.
• Flexibly define the date that the system uses to calculate tax.
• Ensure the prices entered on the sales order are used throughout the sales processes.
• Update tax inclusive prices on the sales order when tax rates change.
• Output the prices inclusive or exclusive of tax to the China Jinshui interface.

Sales order tax inclusive pricing is driven by a new system constant. To take advantage of the new functionality, existing 9.0 customers must activate the new Enable Sales Taxed Prices constant prior to entering sales orders.

03-03-2011 ARCTOOLS Optimizing JD Edwards through data management

ARCTOOLS ensures optimal ERP performance by enabling companies to quickly and efficiently purge and archive excess data.

As application data grows, ERP systems slow down. End-user productivity is reduced and IT resources become stretched to the limit as regular tasks such as database back-ups and maintenance take longer to perform. This costs your business time and money. ARCTOOLS solves this problem by quickly and easily allowing you to identify and purge unneeded data and to transfer historical data to an easily accessible archive environment. Purging and archiving delivers tangible cost-savings. The benefits can be seen not just in terms of storage space but also in terms of better use of system and human resources. It will also make your path to upgrade easier.

12-08-2010  2011 Mileage Rates – A penny saved?

Wow!  A whole penny?  Really?  The IRS recently published the new mileage rates for 2011. Increased a whole penny! 8-) The new rate will be .51/mile.

IR-2010-119, Dec. 3, 2010 WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today issued the 2011 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2011, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

  • 51 cents per mile for business miles driven
  • 19 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations

The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs as determined by the same study. Independent contractor Runzheimer International conducted the study.

A taxpayer may not use the business standard mileage rate for a vehicle after using any depreciation method under the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) or after claiming a Section 179 deduction for that vehicle. In addition, the business standard mileage rate cannot be used for any vehicle used for hire or for more than four vehicles used simultaneously.

Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard mileage rates.

Revenue Procedure 2010-51 contains additional details regarding the standard mileage rates.

10-28-2010 Expiration Dates in EnterpriseOne

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne stores calendar dates in Julian date format. The system allows two-digit dates to be entered to facilitate data entry. The system uses data dictionary item CENTCHG (CenturyChangeYear) to determine the century to use for populating data tables. The system also uses this data dictionary item when automatically populating the default effective through and expiration dates in some data tables.
In releases Xe and ERP8.0, the default value for CENTCHG was set to 10. Thus dates populated using the CENTCHG default value are created as ‘12/31/2010’. In release 8.9, the default value was set to 15, creating a date of ‘12/31/2015’. In releases 8.10 through 9.0, the default value was set to 40, creating a date of ‘12/31/2040’. Oracle recommends that this value be increased for users in the Xe, ERP8.0, and 8.9 releases as well as users who have upgraded from these releases to 8.10 or higher so that the software will supply new effective through dates further into the future.

This document outlines the function of CENTCHG in the software and recommends a change to the CENTCHG data dictionary default as soon as possible. This document also introduces the Date Utility, a tool designed to assist users with identifying and resolving business data with potential date issues. The Date Utility is designed for use with the currently supported tools releases.

09-14-2010 Upgrade Methodology Choices and New Functionality

At some point in time, JD Edwards users will consider upgrading their software. There are various reasons for upgrading, such as expiring support, the desire to use different hardware, or the desire to use new functionality that is available in later versions of the software.

At some point, the JD Edwards user will need to decide between three basic methodology choices when upgrading, with possible variations of each choice:

• Upgrade using the existing footprint first, then implement new functionality later.
• Upgrade and implement new functionality as a single project.
• Upgrade using the existing footprint, while implementing some new functionality, and adding other new functionality later.

Upgrade using the existing footprint first, then implement new functionality later

This approach is attractive because risk associated with introducing new functionality can be separated from the risk associated with the upgrade itself. New functionality can be introduced piecemeal, after end users have become comfortable using the new version of the software. Some JD Edwards users contend that this approach takes more overall time, and interest in using new functionality wanes because it is not a point of focus.

Upgrade and implement new functionality as a single project

This approach is attractive to companies that are upgrading from a very old version of the software, or are migrating from a World version to an EnterpriseOne version. Some organizations find it easier to budget internal resources to a single project. There is obviously more risk with this approach, with the possibility of delays associated with issues with new functionality delaying the overall upgrade project. This approach requires more upfront education of the project team and end users.

Upgrade using the existing footprint, while implementing some new functionality, and adding other new functionality later

This approach is often used by organizations that are upgrading because they require functionality that becomes available in a new version of the software. This approach shares some of the pros and cons of the other two approaches, and is often a good compromise. This approach must be managed, however, or scope creep will cause the upgrade to e extended and go over budget.

In summary, if new functionality will be implemented at a later date, consultants can help identify how new functionality can be used in the future as part of configuration and testing activities.

For more information about upgrade options, contact info@brij.net.

08-25-2010 Innovation on the Road to Recovery

Michael Hawksworth, the President of MSS brings up some thought provoking topics in light of the current economic conditions:

Business leaders need to be addressing the following questions:

* What should our strategic direction and priorities be?
* How can we stimulate creative thinking and spawn innovation within the organization?
* How can we accelerate and improve business strategy alignment and organizational decision making?
* How can we profoundly understand our customers changing needs?

Here’s his conclusion: “The current economic conditions are improving and large enterprises are already preparing for the recovery by moving forward with opportunistic strategic projects and initiatives. Mid-enterprise companies must act with the same urgency. The use of accelerated methods to re-evaluate business strategy and initiatives, identify customer’s emerging needs in rapidly changing environments, re-prioritize projects and implement changes will separate the winners from the losers in today’s complex business environment. Mid-enterprise companies need to begin this process now before they are overwhelmed with operational challenges created by the current state of their business as a result of downsizing and adjustments during the recession.”

08-17-2010 Oracle JD Edwards Software vs. SAP – A Free Case Study

THE BOTTOM LINE – From Nucleus Research

“It is extremely rare to be able to compare total cost of ownership (TCO) of two competing applications within the same company. In this dual ERP environment, SAP is more than four times more costly than JD Edwards EnterpriseOne.”

05-19-2010 Tools 8.98.3 Enhancements

A series of excellent blog posts by Jeff Stevenson – a JD Edwards EnterpriseOne CNC and SQL Server consultant. Jeff begins his review of 8.98.3 with this disclaimer:

“I just returned from a Net Change workshop in Denver on Tools Release 8.98.3 and wanted to discuss some items that I feel may be of interest to the E1 technology community.  Due to the amount of information, I will be publishing these articles in a multi-part series with what I consider the most important (and interesting) items first, followed by those I feel to be of lesser importance/interest.

Please be aware that my reviews are not a comprehensive accounting of all new features in 8.98.3,  that the information presented herein is my interpretation of what I heard, read and utilized, that Oracle can change anything prior to GA release and that, of course, only Redwood can speak for Oracle, they are the final authority on their software.”

His three blog posts share some exciting Tools enhancements.  Thanks, Jeff for sharing with the E1 community!

04/22/2010 Used Laptops Needed For African Kids

Each year we take a group of underprivileged/under-recognized/underserved high school students to a foreign country through a foundation we started called Dustin’s GreenHouse (www.dustinsgreenhouse.org). This year we are taking 10 students to South Africa to work with orphans, do a shark cage dive, experience an African safari and to meet Desmond Tutu. In past trips we have taken used laptops that have been donated by business people who are upgrading to newer models.

In most developing countries having a computer is a dream that never comes true. 04-21-2010 IFRS for SMEs-U.S. GAAP Comparison Tool Available Online

From the Journal of Accountancy – While the SEC moves toward a 2011 vote on whether to require U.S. public companies to report using IFRS, a more compact version of the international standards is already an option, subject to state board approval, for U.S. private companies. Now there’s a free online tool to help preparers understand how that streamlined standard compares to U.S. GAAP.

The IFRS for SMEs-U.S. GAAP Comparison Wiki, available at wiki.ifrs.com, is a collaborative resource launched in January for understanding differences between the two sets of financial reporting standards. IFRS for SMEs is a simplified version of full IFRS aimed at meeting the needs of private company financial reporting users. It eliminates some of the requirements meant specifically for public entities.

03-25-2010 Known Issue Viewing Knowledge Documents Using Firefox 3.6 on My Oracle Support

From MyOracle Support – We are aware of a current issue with My Oracle Support and Firefox 3.6. Using Firefox 3.6, when clicking on a link for a Knowledge document the document appears blank. The workaround is to instead open the documents in a new tab or new window. We are working on the fix for this issue and hope to have this resolved in the near future.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

So, if you’re a Firefox user, it’s not just you.  Try this workaround, or consider a Firefox Add-on, like IEView – which will allow you to configure MyOracleSupport to always launch from IE.

03-10-2010 How to Turn IT Staff Into Business Participants

Jim DiMarzio the CIO of Mazda North American Operations and a CIO Executive Council member asks “How can CIOs position staff to actively partner with the business?”

Excerpt: It’s one thing for IT leaders and staff to know the business, but it’s another to play an active role in the process of planning and conducting that business. This is what has to happen if IT is to have a more strategic impact on the company and the bottom line, from the CIO on down. That integration will come not after one project, but after a series of simple steps that demonstrate the process to your staff through your actions.”

03-10-2010 Avoiding the Technical Risks of Third-Party Support

Don’t end up skating on thin ice! First TomorrowNow, then Rimini Street. Who will be the next to challenge Oracle for support services? Oracle.com has outlined some important points to keep in mind.  Just a few:

No other support organization can match Oracle’s breadth and depth of technical expertise, advanced support technologies, or global reach.

Oracle is the only vendor who can provide fixes for the PeopleSoft PeopleTools and JD Edwards Technology Foundation technology platforms.  Without support directly from Oracle, customers may be exposing their mission-critical systems to significant risks.Without updates to the PeopleTools and Technology Foundation platforms, customers run the risk of running their mission-critical applications on a technology platform that is unsupported. Customers who choose a third party support vendor assume a significant risk that the vendor may not be able to provide the required business functionality, or meet support service level agreements. With Oracle, you can ensure that your systems are up to date with the most current tax and regulatory requirements where available.

03-10-2010 49% want earlier implementation of IFRS in US

From Reuters: In a survey of 2,500 executives by accounting firm KPMG LLP [KPMG.UL], 49 percent said they would like the option to adopt IFRS, which are already used in more than 100 countries, before 2015, if the U.S. does plan to formally make the switch.

“Many U.S. companies with subsidiaries around the world are already using IFRS for statutory reporting,” said Janice Patrisso, partner and national IFRS leader at KPMG. “For them, having the option to synchronize it all up front at the U.S. company is a positive.”

The SEC, which still supports the development of a single set of high-quality global accounting rules, said it would come up with its own “work plan” and make another decision next year about whether the U.S. would move to IFRS. But even the 2015 date is not certain.

02-19-2010 2020 Vision: Why You Won’t Recognize the ‘Net in 10 Years

Courtesy of CIO Magazine – an interesting article by Carolyn Duffy Marsan of Network World -

“As they imagine the Internet of 2020, computer scientists across the country are starting from scratch and re-thinking everything: from IP addresses to DNS to routing tables to Internet security in general. They’re envisioning how the Internet might work without some of the most fundamental features of today’s ISP and enterprise networks.  Their goal is audacious: To create an Internet without so many security breaches, with better trust and built-in identity management. Researchers are trying to build an Internet that’s more reliable, higher performing and better able to manage exabytes of content. And they’re hoping to build an Internet that extends connectivity to the most remote regions of the world, perhaps to other planets.”

01-28-2010 Oracle Finalizes Acquisition of Sun

We are pleased to announce that Oracle has completed its acquisition of Sun Microsystems and Sun is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Oracle. With this news, we want to reiterate our commitment to deliver complete, open and integrated systems that help our customers improve the performance, reliability and security of their IT infrastructure. We would also like to thank the many customers that have supported us throughout the acquisition process.

There is no doubt that this combination transforms the IT industry. With the addition of servers, storage, SPARC processors, the Solaris operating system, Java, and the MySQL database to Oracle’s portfolio of database, middleware, and business and industry applications, we plan to engineer and deliver open and integrated systems – from applications to disk – where all the pieces fit and work together out of the box.

Performance levels will be unmatched. Oracle’s software already runs faster on Sun SPARC/Solaris than on any other server or operating system. With Sun as a part of Oracle, each layer of the stack will be engineered to further improve performance, reliability and manageability so that IT will be more predictable, more supportable, and more secure. Customers will benefit as their system performance goes up and their system integration and management costs go down.

In addition, our open standards-based technology will give customers choice. Customers can purchase our fully integrated systems, or easily integrate our best-of-breed technologies with their existing environments. Our open technology also enables customers to take full advantage of third party innovations. Oracle also plans to extend its partner specialization program to include Sun technologies to better enable partners to deliver differentiated and value-added solutions to customers.

As always, our primary goal is 100% customer satisfaction. We are dedicated to delivering without interruption the quality of support and service that you have come to expect from Oracle and Sun, and more. Oracle plans to enhance Sun customer support by improving support access, offering better interoperability support between Oracle and Sun products and delivering services in more local languages. Support procedures for your existing Sun and Oracle products are unchanged, so for now you should continue to use the same channels you’ve been using. Customers can continue to purchase products from Sun in the same way they did prior to the acquisition. We will communicate any changes to this through regular channels.

We are very excited about this combination and look forward to delivering to you increased innovation through accelerated investment in Sun’s hardware and software technologies such as SPARC, Solaris, Java, and MySQL. If you weren’t able to join the live event on January 27 where we, along with Larry Ellison and other executives from Oracle and Sun outlined how this powerful combination will transform the IT industry, you are welcome to view the replay that can be accessed at oracle.com/sun.

Sincerely,
Charles Phillips

12-09-2009 Inside Oracle Fusion Apps

AMR Research recently reported 10 questions with Steve Miranda regarding Fusion Applications. Mr. Miranda is the senior vice president of application development at Oracle and is responsible for all Fusion Applications development.  Read his answers to such questions as:

  • From a developer’s perspective, how does the development of Fusion Applications differ from other apps you’ve worked on, and what’s been the most challenging part of the whole project?
  • Fusion Applications are being developed using model-based design. What does this mean for Oracle developers, and what might/should it mean to customers and partners?
  • What do you expect for a learning curve for partners and customers?
  • Your new user interface is a dramatic improvement. What did you do differently?
  • And more….

Good stuff!  Check it out here.

12-09-2009 The Cost of the Status Quo

In her excellent blog post, Diane Smigel from Oracle Business Partner MSS Technologies points out that “The Cost of the Status Quo (COSQ) is one of the most important inputs to informed IT decision-making. COSQ has four key components that should be quantified as part of the business case for any technology decision: direct costs, indirect costs, hidden costs, and opportunity costs.”

Her article begins with this insightful observation -

“Most companies struggle to justify new technology investments. This is especially true in tough economic times, when popular wisdom suggests that major IT  investments be deferred or canceled. This could be a serious mistake, and even fatal,  for some organizations.”

She then shares a real-world example and concludes with the reminder of how important it is to incorporate COSQ analysis into annual planning, as well as project justification.

Are you holding steady – or moving forward?

12-08-2009 A Season for Giving

Over the years I have become aware of how deep the technology gap is for low income families. Just think what your laptop brings to you in the way of email information, social networking, research for your work and your entertainment. People just don’t realize how valuable a PC or laptop can be for someone who doesn’t have one, but businesses stack old computer equipment in a closet as it gathers dust and becomes useless as time passes. Over the last couple of years I have solicited businesses to donate their old but still useful computers and now over 200 computers have been distributed to group homes, helped develop a Salvation Army computer lab, and even provided an orphanage in Peru with technology they never thought would be possible.

So here is my plea once again during the Giving Season – and a time that is at the end of the fiscal year for many businesses. If it is that time when you know you are about to sideline your current PC or laptop for a newer model, remember there is still a lot of life in it and learning that can done by someone who currently does not have a computer, an email address, a Facebook page, or a blog. Please give us computers with life and not  broken or damaged equipment that really should hit the trash bin. We plan on some of this year’s donations going to orphans in South Africa.

This Season – give and help others.

Martin Green – President, brij

11-11-2009 Google Wave – A Free On-line Guide

You may have heard about it. Maybe you recently received an invitation to participate. You’ll be hearing more. The Complete Guide to Google Wave is a collaborative user manual for Google Wave written and edited by Gina Trapani with Adam Pash. Launched one month after the Google Wave preview release, this guide is the most current, comprehensive, independent user resource for the most ambitious (and confusing) web application ever created. According to Gina and Adam,

“Google Wave is a new online communications tool that enables groups of people to edit and discuss documents simultaneously on the web. The Google Wave team says Wave is ‘what email would look like if it were invented today.’  However, because Wave is mostly a document collaboration tool, the oversimplified email metaphor can mislead new users.  The initial Wave experience can feel chaotic and confusing, but use cases for Wave abound. Come on in and meet Wave”

Free to read on-line with eight chapters, Appendix A (What Wave Can’t Do) and Appendix B (A Collaborative resource to add to and clarify the guide).  Click here when your turn comes to learn the Wave!

10-23-2009 The Importance of Discovering Your Plan B

Have you ever said, “Always have a Plan B?” This interesting presentation from Changethis.com by John Mullins and Randy Komisar explains:

Most business plans assume that most everything is already known up front—not the case, as our examples have now shown. As the famed American general in World War II, Douglas MacArthur, is reputed to have once said, “No plan ever survives its first encounter with the enemy.  The process articulated here is a healthy alternative to the straight-jacket of today’s business planning practices—to enable you to anticipate and move beyond a failing Plan A. It is a process designed for learning and discovering, rather than for pitching and selling. It’s a process that recognizes the cold, hard facts—most often, what ultimately works is not the Plan A that was so persuasively articulated in the original plan. Instead, it’s Plan B.

Authors: John Mullins teaches entrepreneurship and venture capital at the London Business School and in regular workshops on four continents. He is also the author of the definitive work on assessing entrepreneurial opportunities, The New Business Road Test. Randy Komisar is a partner at the esteemed VC firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a lecturer on Entrepreneurship at Stanford University, and the author of the bestseller The Monk and the Riddle, which was selected as one of the top 100 business books of all time. Together they are the authors of Getting to Plan B: Breaking Through to a Better Business Model (Harvard Business Press, 2009).

Oracle announces the availability of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 24.0.0 for customers running JD Edwards EnterpriseOne application releases XE and 8.0.

Prior JDE E1 Tools releases for application versions XE and 8.0 were designated as a Service Pack with an “SP” prefix. For example, the prior Tools release was known as Service Pack 23 or SP23. Beginning with release 24.0.0 the naming convention is being changed to match Oracle’s naming convention.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 24.0.0 contains the following additional platform certifications:

  • Support for Oracle Database 11g  Note: Beginning with JDE E1 Tools 24.0.0, support for Oracle Database 11g has been expanded to include HP-UX 11.31 on HP Integrity (Itanium based processor) servers.
  • Support for IBM i 6.1 on IBM POWER Systems
  • Support for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (64-bit on x86-64 hardware)  Note: JDE E1 continues to run as a 32-bit application within the 64-bit operating system

10-16-2009 Are your Media Objects being backed up?

Media Objects. What are these magical components within EnterpriseOne? How much would you really miss them if they were gone one day? First, let’s take a look at Media Objects and what they do before we dig deeper to see if they are being backed up.

Media Objects in E1 could be any of the following:

  • Text – Notes utilizing built in word processor
  • Image – e.g. a gif from a fax
  • OLE – Object Linking and Embedding technology
  • JDE Shortcuts – launch other E1 applications
  • URLs – a web link such as www.brij.net

While in the E1 applications your users are probably using this functionality on a regular basis. They could be in Sales Order entry and need to add special instructions on how that order is to be handled and utilizing the Text type Media Object. They might be using Media Objects to store drawings of inventory items.

So where are these magical Media Objects being stored? Look at the application P98MOQUE.

P98MOQUE

If you note under the Queue path On-Line you will see the address of the server where these objects are stored. Usually this is the Windows server share path on the deployment server, but it could be any another file server on your network. In this example it is stored on the server ent02 and the share is actually mediaobj.

Check with your Network Administrator and confirm that the path defined under Queue path On-Line (e.g. \\ent02\mediaobj) is being backed up. The entire server might already be in the backup list but we are just doing some double checking.

The other location to look at is your JAS servers. This only relates to clients on SP23-8.96 tools releases. Locate your JAS.ini file first – this may require assistance from your CNC Administrator. Once the JAS.ini is located we will need to look at the stanza [OWWEB]. Here you will find a setting for MO QUEUE= and you will see something similar to the path below:

D:\WebSphere\AppServer\installedApps\ent02\EA_JS_81_ent02.ear\webclient.war\moqueue
Or
MO QUEUE=webclient.war\moqueue

Once again please see your Network Administrator to be sure your directories are being backed up on a regular basis. Keep in mind if you have multiple JAS servers, each one will need to be examined.

These tips are based on a typical out of the box installation on a Windows based platform. There could be other configuration variations, but the point is to be sure your Magical Media Objects are being backed up on a regular basis.

10-15-2009 Fusion Applications in 2010

From IDG News Service as reported by ComputerWorld – Oracle plans to launch its long-awaited Fusion Applications in 2010, and they will be deployable both on-premises and as SaaS (software as a service), CEO Larry Ellison said Wednesday during a keynote address at the OpenWorld conference in San Francisco.

Fusion Applications, which Oracle first announced several years ago, will combine the best elements of Oracle’s various business software product lines into a next-generation suite. Oracle has placed special emphasis on improving the user experience with Fusion, as well as embedded BI (business intelligence) throughout the applications, Ellison said.

Ellison’s keynote contained the most specific information the company has provided about Fusion Applications since first announcing the project several years ago. The CEO took pains to tell the packed room of Siebel, JD Edwards and E-Business Suite users that Oracle has no plans to abandon the product lines anytime soon.

“Oracle will continue to enhance those applications for the next decade and beyond. We’re absolutely committed to do that,” he said to applause. “We can afford to not only maintain the software you’re running today, but also build the software you may want to move to tomorrow.”

The administrator can also configure this security by application and also choose to issue an error or warning when the user has not entered in the required fields.
  • Automatic Generation of Tables and Indices in ESUs
A modification to the process for applying Electronic Software Updates (ESUs) to automatically generate new tables and indices that  previously required manual special instructions.

10-01-2009 EnterpriseOne Version Overrides Upgrade Planning

When you’re planning to upgrade EnterpriseOne, how can you identify all versions that have version overrides?

Whenever a new version is created, if no overrides are performed, only one RDASPEC record is created with a Record Type of ‘1‘. If additional overrides are performed on the version, then additional RDASPEC records are created.

There is not a standard report or simple inquiry that can be performed to see all versions with overrides. However, if you look at the F98761 table in the central objects data source and find all records with a specific version name that have record types other than ’1′ you would discover that some type of override was performed on the object. Depending on the value in the record type field (RSRCRDTP) you can determine what type of override exists for the version.

The record types are:
1 = Base Record
2 = Sections (will have one type 2 record for each section of a report)
3 = Report objects (one record for each report variable and constant on the report)
4 = Column calculation defined on tabular sections
5 = Subsection join (defines join information between sections)
6 = Data Sequencing (will have one record for each data item included in data sequencing)
7 = Data Selection (will have one record for each data item included in data selection)
8 = Database output (one record indicating destination for output -filename)
9 = Database output (one record for each mapping in database output)
10 = Row on tabular section (one record for each row)
11 = Cell on tabular section (one record for each cell)
13 = Row calculation defined on tabular section
16 = Event rule overrides performed at version level
17 = Row on tabular section (record for defined row criteria
18 = Cell on tabular section (record for defined cell criteria)
19 = Column data selection on tabular section
20 = Column and row overrides (tabular section only)

Lenley Hensarling, who was a VP at Oracle and the GM for the JD Edwards product recently left Oracle. Lyle Ekdahl – previously the Vice President of Product Strategy for EnterpriseOne, will take Lenley’s place as the new General Manager for the JD Edwards Product. John Schiff will continue in his position as the GM for the JD Edwards World Product and will be reporting to Mr. Ekdahl.

09-10-2009 World A9.2 Sales Repost Enhancements

Sales Repost Enhancements in World A9.2

Option to not Update Audit Information

  • Users have long been interested in selecting Item/Location records for purging, based on the last transaction against the location. The dilemma being that the Sales Order Repost program always updates the audit information in the Item/Location file F41021. While reposting can be done every day, the Last Update Date cannot be used for data selection in the purge program. Release A9.2 resolves this issue by adding a new processing option to control whetherthe Date & Time Audit fields are updated Sales Repost updates the Item Location (F41021) record.
  • Audit Fields – Enter 1 to skip updating the date and time audit fields (Date Updated, Time of Day) on the Item Location file (F41021). If left blank, Date Updated & Time of Day are updated whenever the item commitment fields are updated.

Repost Active Sales Orders / Repost Futures & Order Holds

In Release A9.2, the Sales Repost program has been enhanced to:

  • Place future orders on hold if they can only be partially shipped. Prior to this enhancement In Release A9.2, the Repost program did not place orders on a partial hold. The program has been enhanced to place re-committed future orders on hold if the order is not fully shippable and, the ship-to customer does not accept partial order shipments.
  • Recommit current orders to future. Customers asked for the Sales Repost program to reprocess existing orders to determine if they must be future committed when changes are made to the commitment days in the Branch/Plant Constants. A9.2 brings this functionality to the repost process. The program can now recommit current orders to future when the current order should be future based on the new commitment horizon. When future orders are recommitted or current orders are recommitted to future, an audit report is produced listing each detail line.
  • Source future orders using the inventory commitment preference. When reposting active sales orders, the program now uses the inventory commitment reference to source sales lines from multiple Branch/Plants when the sales order is being recommitted from future to current.

Based on File

In A9.1, the based on file for Sales Repost is F4102 Item Branch. Users of the release A7.3 were accustomed to using the F4211 Sales Order Detail file. Because the advantages to both, A9.2 now gives users the choice of which file to use depending upon the DREAM Writer version. All of the functionality in the program works with either based on file.

  • XJDE0001 (Repost Active Sales Orders) version uses the F4102 as the based on file. To guarantee that all Item Location records are accurately reposted, use a version with the F4102 as the based on file
  • All other versions (Repost Active Sales Orders) use the F4211 as the based on file. If you use a version with the F4211 as the based on file to do this, only Item Location (F41021) records for which there are open sales orders are updated

08-02-2009 Clean Looking EnterpriseOne Reports

Make your Executives Happy with Nice, Clean Looking EnterpriseOne Reports

If you are on EnterpriseOne 8.9 or above you may notice your reports font is not what you would like. Sometimes the Times New Roman Font is not as clear as you would like. This can be easily changed by using the Work with Fonts application P98980.

Update either the Domestic language or the language selected via the User Profile (P0092) application. The preferred Font to use and default in Report Design Aid is Arial.

07-31-2009 Are you using the correct Primary Unit of Measure?

In your manufacturing environment, are you using the correct Primary Unit of Measure?

Because inventory quantities are stored in the primary unit of measure, you obtain the best precision by designating your smallest unit as the primary unit of measure. An issue seen with many JD Edwards users are items being setup with the wrong primary unit of measure. The primary unit of measure must be the lowest stocking level or costing level, especially in the manufacturing environment. Materials are stocked in inventory in their primary unit of measure. Trying to issue materials in a lower unit of measure than the primary is a financial/costing issue as well as a stocking problem.

Remember this rule: If the Primary UOM is not the smallest, unexpected results can occur.

07-24-2009 Going it Alone: Upgrading JD Edwards EnterpriseOne by Yourself

Should you upgrade your JD Edwards EnterpriseOne system yourself, or should you hire someone else to do it for you? There are many technology components that make up the EnterpriseOne software suite, thus many components to be upgraded: core Tools, updates and ESU’s, database, and operating systems. This article will focus on upgrading your EnterpriseOne software from one major release to another; for example Applications 8.10 to Applications 9.0, which usually entails a Tools release upgrade as well.

Before you upgrade, perform an assessment of your internal skill sets to see if you have what it takes to get this task completed in a timely, predictable manner. Let’s say your internal technology team members have a great knowledge of JD Edwards architecture and system administration (Configurable Network Computing, or CNC). They are confident they can perform the task because they have managed the system for years, are comfortable with the technology and know that they have successfully expanded the boundaries of their skills throughout their career. This is how great technology people are created—by addressing challenges through education and experimentation.

The questions to ask are: What is the cost of developing those skills and how often will those skills be employed? When will you have to upgrade again? What is the value to the organization of developing the skills required to upgrade a JD Edwards release level?

The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne major release cycle is a new release about every eighteen months, with full support for that release (patches, fixes, upgrade scripts, tax and regulatory updates) for five years. Tax and regulatory updates are delivered for one additional year. On average, JD Edwards customers upgrade major release levels within the support window of five years. If you upgrade more frequently—sticking more closely to the release cycle rather than the support window—you may opt to build much of the upgrade skill set internally. If you tend to upgrade based on the support window, the skills that you develop to perform an upgrade will not be maintained through practice and the risk of an unsuccessful upgrade increases dramatically.

Sometimes there are changes to the upgrade process, e.g. between Tools Release 8.96 and 8.97. Regardless of your upgrade cycle, you should consider getting outside assistance with planning and preparing for your upgrade to make sure you are aware of any changes and are properly prepared for the execution. Also, even if you are planning to outsource the upgrade, there are steps in the process where your normal JD Edwards EnterpriseOne administrative skills can be deployed, reducing the amount of outside assistance required and lowering the overall cost if you are willing and able to participate in the process.

So you are going on your own that is excellent, let me give you some simple best practices to follow.

* Take your Time and be Meticulous – Time might not be one of your luxuries but it is essential for your first pass. If you are already resource constrained, a self-upgrade project may not be your best option.

* Research – There are many components to the EnterpriseOne software package and they work harmoniously together. The Upgrade Manual is a good place to start but it often does not include important information or resolutions to issues discovered after it was written. Be sure you know all about the upgrade process before you begin, including any supplemental documentation or Response Line calls opened.

* Minimum Technical Requirements – Go through them carefully and do a formal hardware sizing to make sure you deploy the proper infrastructure.

* Document, Document, Document - your entire process – (Take notes)

* Have a ‘Plan B’ – Know who you can call for help and communicate with them while you are still in the planning stage.

07-24-2009 Tools Release Upgrade–Technology Benefits Without the Full Upgrade Overhead

JD Edwards Tools Release Upgrade
The Technology Benefits Without the Full Upgrade Overhead

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools releases are smaller projects that are not too time consuming unless you have many servers in your configuration or a complex or non-standard configuration. So if you would like to make your JD Edwards administration job a bit easier it is time to go to Tools 8.97 or higher. One reason for moving to a later Tools Release is that beginning with Tools 8.97 Oracle has now included a great management tool named Server Manager which allows you to centrally monitor, deploy and configure all of the servers in your EnterpriseOne installation, including the deployment of new Tools Releases. The move from a Tools Release prior to Tools 8.97 requires a bit more work than a standard Tools Release upgrade, but once it is done future Tools Release upgrades are easier and life for your JD Edwards administrators has never looked so good.

We always recommend extensively testing your new Tools Release before deploying to Production. It is best practice to test a Tools Release by setting up Multi-Foundation, a method of configuring your system to run both Tools Releases concurrently on your existing installation, or on a dedicated JD Edwards test bed. Setting up Multi-Foundation involves one-time effort that can be leveraged for future Tools Release upgrades as well.

For more information on the benefits of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Server Manager or the latest Tools Releases, contact us and we will send you the must-read documents covering each JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools Release.

07-20-2009 Top 7 Reasons JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Customers Choose the Oracle Technology Stack

Long prized for its open platform strategy, Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne can now run on a complete Oracle technology stack—including Oracle VM, Oracle Enterprise Linux, Oracle Database 11g, Oracle Fusion Middleware, and Oracle Enterprise Manager.

Here are the seven top reasons to run JD Edwards EnterpriseOne on a complete Oracle technology stack:

  • Assure system uptime and performance with Oracle Enterprise Manager. Working together, Oracle Enterprise Manager and the Application Management Pack for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne give system administrators a top-down view of all servers and their infrastructure, managed from a single console. The result: better proactive monitoring of servers, faster troubleshooting, and a higher service level for end users.
  • Give business users more control over report content and formatting. With the integration of Oracle BI Publisher with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, business users can now design more-robust output templates for their reports, including pictures, logos, and font control. Business users can also write ad hoc queries into the JD Edwards data and run reports through common desktop tools such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Reduce the cost, complexity, and risk of integrating applications within Oracle’s portfolio. The Oracle technology stack helps provide seamless integrations to Oracle’s best-of-breed applications, including project management, demand planning, forecasting, content management, and CRM On Demand. Oracle’s Application Integration Architecture and Process Integration Packs provide a flexible, standards-based framework for building resilient business processes more quickly and at lower cost.
  • Improve performance and increase flexibility of business processes. The Oracle technology stack also helps customers integrate JD Edwards EnterpriseOne with third-party applications. With the Oracle SOA Suite, users can re-engineer business processes with more agility while avoiding service interruptions.
  • Simplify and improve user access and security. With Oracle Access Manager, users can sign into all of their systems at once, which eliminates the need for multiple usernames and passwords, helps enforce strong password and authentication policies, and provides a centralized framework for security and compliance enforcement.
  • Increase productivity with a consistent user interface. As JD Edwards users switch from one Oracle application to another, Oracle’s standard user interface design provides a seamless design experience that incorporates the latest advances in UI design. Users spend less time learning how to navigate new interfaces, which increases productivity.
  • Build enterprise IT on a trusted, reliable, rock-solid platform. Oracle’s JD Edwards EnterpriseOne is engineered and tested to work with Oracle’s core technology—Oracle VM, Oracle Enterprise Linux, Oracle Database 11g, and Oracle Fusion Middleware, all of which consistently garner the industry’s top rankings.

07-12-2009 Strategic Acceleration – Change Your Thinking to Change Your Results

From changethis.com – a manifesto from Tony Jeary.  “As the public perception of the economy worsens, it is possible we may worry ourselves into an even worse reality. The greatest threat to our economy right now is the cumulative effect of businesses failing to take action they need to take, as they “wait” to find out what is going to happen. If all businesses slide into a “wait” posture, the ripple-through effect could be a serious problem on the entire economy. Unfortunately, the early signs of this “waiting” syndrome are already on the horizon!  Prudence is one thing. The fear of doing what needs to be done is quite another. There are actions that need to be taken now to position your business to survive and thrive. This manifesto is a challenge for specific action that will require you to change your thinking, if you want to change your results!”

06-28-2009 Accelerating Enterprise Application ROI

In an era of strict financial management discipline, why do companies still fail to generate sufficient returns in a timely fashion from their enterprise application investments? In most cases, the answer is a lack of an effective enterprise application training platform that supports software implementations and upgrades throughout the entire project lifecycle. Through interviews with service providers, this white paper identifies the most important capabilities of an effective enterprise application training platform. The white paper also examines the pressures companies and their project managers confront when tackling enterprise application implementations and upgrades.

The discussion includes a close look at the five factors—business alignment, communications, training, measurement, and support and reinforcement—that determine the success or failure of enterprise application implementations and upgrades. The conclusion reached is that using an effective enterprise application training platform to address these critical success factors allows an organization to reduce the time required to realize—and often exceed—the expected returns on their enterprise software investments.

06-21-2009 Clarification on Extended Support for EnterpriseOne 8.11

You may have heard that Oracle has waived the fees for the first year of Extended Support for EnterpriseOne 8.11.

The Key Dates are:

EnterpriseOne 8.11
General Availability: December 2004
End of Premier Support: December 2009
End of Tax, Regulatory and Legislative Support: December 2010

The extension DOES NOT change the date for Tax, Regulatory and Legislative Support, it only provides for patches and fixes for an additional year through December 2010.

Many customers use the End of Tax, Regulatory and Legislative Support date as the true end of support date since their installed system has probably stabilized to the point that few new fixes are required. If you are using the End of Tax, Regulatory and Legislative Support date as your planning date for upgrade purposes, please make sure you understand that this announcement does not bring you additional time.

05-21-2009 Oracle Gives Customers A Break On Maintenance Fees

At the recent Collaborate conference in Orlando, Oracle President Charles Phillips announced that the company has waived Extended Support fees for several Oracle major product lines through 2010 and 2011.  Read details from Oracle’s official press release here.  Mary Hayes Weir from Information Week gives her detailed analysis of this news where she concludes “This announcement shows Oracle making sacrifices on profitability, too. For every $1 million software license on the above products purchased in 2005, it will get about $22,000 less in maintenance fees next year.  However, large software vendors such as Oracle and SAP are unlikely to make major changes to their software license and maintenance strategies unless customers start moving in droves to alternative approaches, including modern hosted software approaches such as software as a service.”

05-19-2009 What is my batch job doing? With E1 Tools 8.98 – now you know!

Previously, you had limited information available for a batch process which was actively processing. If a batch job runs longer than expected, there were not quick and accurate tools to analyze the situation or the potential results. The Batch Processing Features available in EnterpriseOne Tools 8.98 give you the tools you need to figure out what’s going on with your batch job.

You now can have:

  • Audit Data –Details about how a batch job was submitted and how it completed.
  • Dynamic Logging –The ability to turn detailed logging on and off while a batch job is processing.
  • Introspection –The ability to display statistics regarding the state of a batch job while it is running.

These tools allow you to:

  • Analyze performance and processing trends across a history of submitted reports
  • Determine if a batch process is actively processing or is “hung up”
  • View details about what an active batch process is currently doing Estimate if/when a batch process will reach completion

Tip: Introspection drives requirements to the Enterprise Server configuration: two new IPC resources will be created by each UBE, including Interconnects. So, if you run 100 UBEs by default on your server, EOne will require 200 more IPC resources. The maximum IPC resource allocation and ranges will almost certainly need to be tuned in your Server’s JDE.INI to allow for this!

Below are some screen shots to give you an idea of how this works in a real environment.

04-30-2009 8.98 EnterpriseOne Application Failure Recovery

P95400

This feature is implemented to help customers manage unexpected transaction failures. When transaction failures happen, if JAS is still up, JAS will detect the transaction failure and save the transaction data in the database. Email notification is supported for system administrators and end users. Upon receiving the notification or re-login, users can review the saved data and resubmit the transaction.

This enhancement gives users opportunity to recover transaction data when a transaction is submitted before: kernel crashes; unresponsive enterprise server; and network issues between JAS and the enterprise server.

The call stack that leads to the failure is saved in the F95400 table as XML documents. For transaction forms, all visible controls and grid cells are saved. For browse forms, no data is saved.

Users can setup email notifications for transactional failures and they will receive an email with a short cut to the P95400 application.

04-21-2009 Oracle Buys Sun

On April 20, 2009, Oracle announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Sun Microsystems (Sun). The proposed transaction is subject to Sun stockholder approval, certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Until the deal closes, each company will continue to operate independently, and it is business as usual. More details from Oracle & Sun Microsystems.

04-11-2009 Pre-Open Files in JD Edwards World

To give your interactive programs a speed boost, consider allowing users to access some of the system files to Pre-Open.  When you setup a group of files to be pre-opened (see figure 1 below), those files are opened when the users log into their World environment, and stay open until they log off.  This only applies to interactive, not batch programs.  There are numerous files (security file, address book, branch plant constants, order activity rules, business unit master, etc.) that are opened & closed multiple times during the course of the day.  If these files we’re opened only once at sign-on, interactive programs using these files will not have to perform the open & close on those files because it’s already happened.  The initial log-on & log-off will take a little longer than usual, but the time saved during the working day offsets this minor slowdown.  A word of warning. Use common sense.  You don’t want to try to pre-open every file each user needs.    Instead, just pre-open those they access excessively (like the business unit master), but not transaction type files (like sales order detail) unless that user is in that file all day long.  The pre-open process  locks those files for each user, so copying those files will be a little more difficult for your IT staff (difficult but not impossible).

To set this up:
•    The security officer needs to access the G944 menu option 16 (see figure 2 below).  There are some predefined Pre-Opens, and they located in the F0095 file.  Depending on which version of World you are using the Pre-Open file names will be different.  Create your own or use the predefined ones.
•    Once you’re done with creating your own, or finding the predefined ones you want to use, the security officer will need to apply them by using the G94 menu option 2.  Inquire on a user, tab down to User Type, and add the Pre-Open type you want the user to use.  Once you’ve added it, they will have to sign-off and back on again for the change to occur.  Removing it from the user profile will stop the Pre-Open as well (after the user has logged off the system).

03-25-2009 Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA)

The CPSIA aims to set what would be the most stringent guidelines worldwide for children’s products containing lead and phthalates (a chemical used in some vinyl products). Products intended for children ages 12 and under must meet these guidelines with certifications of doing so from a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) accredited laboratory.   What does this mean to your processes, quality control, testing, and lot trace/track reporting?  The CPSC has a website dedicated to detailed information about this important legislation – http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/cpsia.html, which includes timelines, presentations, requirements and guidance, and important updates.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0 lot tracing capability provides functionality to both: trace a lot backward across multiple branch/plants and multiple levels within manufacturing and transfer process to the initial purchase receipt; and trace a lot forward across multiple levels within manufacturing and transfer process to last shipment made.

The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0 Quality Management system allows you to collect samples and perform quality tests at user-defined points in the business cycle and verify whether the material meets specifications at different points in the business flow.

For more information about how to best use existing software functionality to make sure your business conforms to the CPSIA, please contact sonja.hodges@brij.net.  To share what your organization is doing to comply with the CPSIA requirements, please comment to this post.

03-15-2009 World A9.1 PC Import/Export Functionality

A powerful, convenient and very useful feature of JD Edwards World version A9.1 is the ability to import/export data. In order to use the Import/Export functionality, you must have access to a shared directory in the Integrated File Structure (IFS) on your AS/400, iSeries, or System i5 Server. You can map this drive on your Windows PC to allow Windows programs to access this data. Make sure you setup your Import/Export preferences in the User Display Preferences option on menu G944 to designate your IFS path.

JD Edwards World Software provides CSV files that you can use as spreadsheet templates when importing data into your system. The templates contain column headings and database field names for each column of data in the spreadsheet that you import. The database field name allows the import process to map data from the spreadsheet columns to the corresponding database field in the batch input file or interactive subfile.

UDC 00/IE will tell you which programs are already setup for Interactive Export functionality, and UDC 00/II lists programs already setup for Interactive Import functionality. The export feature is only available for subfile programs, while the import feature is available for both subfile programs and programs that only display one record at a time.

For more detailed information, consult the JD Edwards World Technical Foundation Guide.

03-05-2009 Expiration Dates – Sooner than I thought!

expirationdates

Do you know what controls the expiration date when you leave this value blank? In many cases, this is controlled by the value in the Data Dictionary for element CENTCHG. Do you know what this value is in your environment? If it’s set to 10 – a common setting during install – you may have many records scheduled to expire on 12/31/10. For example, think about cross reference numbers, lot expiration dates, bill of material and routing effective through dates, pricing records, lease expiration, etc., etc. This is 2009 – hard to believe, right? If your century cutoff date is set to 10, you may be running into this problem very soon.

EnterpriseOne also uses the DCYR data dictionary element, and WorldSoftware has a #CYR element, but no worries here – The Data Dictionary application will make the same default value change to DCYR or #CYR when the default value of CENTCHG is changed by the user.

02-12-2009 What in the World are your users doing?

Are you taking advantage of the Set Attention Program in JD Edwards World to give your users more flexibility and work more proficiently? Typical setup is done in such a way so that users only have access to one program at any given time. While this may work for beginner or temp workers, most experienced and power users could use more of the system if they were given the ability. The basic user is setup in security as shown below in figure 1. As you can see, the Set Attention Program (bottom of the screen) is empty. The Attention Program is a special menu you can setup and is assigned to the ESC key on the keyboard. Looking at figure 2 below, you can see that this user now has a value in the Set Attention Program (*AP). This value (*AP) is an actual custom menu in the World environment. You can create it using the option 1 on menu G901. Once you create the menu, don’t forget to update the user’s security profile by specifying this new custom menu as their Set Attention Program option. Also note, that the menu actually begins with an “*” in the security setup, which indicates that this is not a regular menu but an attention key menu (similar to the % menu definition), but the actual menu definition does not have the “*” in the name of the menu (figure 3). Looking at figure 3, you can see that you have the ability to set versions for the attention key program no different than a regular menu. I always suggest setting up Inquiry attention key programs by job type (A/P, A/R, INV, Technical, etc.), and then assign them to the appropriate users. This attention key option gives the user the ability to open up multiple programs (for example an A/P user performing data entry but needing to inquire on the Supplier # by using the Supplier Ledger Inquiry) but still leave open their original program initiated from the menu (see figure 4).

01-25-2009 The Power of Cost Transparency: Finding Hidden Value in Manufacturing Networks

Timely and helpful. Check out this recent Boston Consulting Group study by authors Andreas Maurer, Daniel Spindelndreier, and Alexander Türpitz. The current economic downturn has companies scrambling to cut costs and generate cash. This report shows how to find major cost savings by rethinking and redesigning global manufacturing operations for optimal performance. This approach can unlock a huge amount of hidden value–often 10 to 15 percent in cost savings–yet it’s often overlooked as a cost-cutting measure. A detailed analysis of hidden cost “drivers” can cut through operational complexity and deliver straight answers for making the right redesign decisions. Read the entire report here.

01-13-2009 A Critical Success Factor – What is a bridge person?

A recent independent study indicated that 93% of ERP implementations take longer than expected and 59% cost more than initially assumed.  A critical factor in a successful implementation is including people who can understand both the functional requirements (business needs) and technology solutions to these needs.

Every project requires both technical and functional resources. Because the perspectives of these two groups are so diverse, there is a critical need for a person who can move easily between these two worlds and keep them moving in unison – a “bridge”.  What makes a good bridge person? How do you find one? How can you empower a bridge person, and maximize their effectiveness to promote systems project success.  Read more

01-13-2009 Avoiding Abnormal System Behavior with Server Preventative Maintenance

Are you experiencing abnormal system behavior?  Are you spending hours trouble-shooting to find there was a simple solution?

Through regularly scheduled preventative maintenance you can alleviate possible system instability and save time.  For Windows based environments, we recommend server reboots once a week. For Unix environments the general rule of thumb is a reboot a month. As for AS400,  once a month may be a bit much, we recommend an IPL once a quarter.  Regular scheduled maintenance is key.

One of the benefits of rebooting your server on a regular basis is to ensure there are no memory leaks.  If you begin to have memory leaks, you may experience abnormal behaviors within the system.  These abnormal behaviors may then lead to hours of trouble-shooting and wasted time.  A great way to make sure your system gets rebooted when necessary is to set it up on an automated schedule.  “Set it & Forget it!”

12-19-2008 Workflow and Purchase Order Approval 8.12

Symptom: You think you have purchase order approval correctly setup, but when a PO is entered, messages are not sent to the approver.

Solution:

  • Make sure the JDE.IN on the Application server is set correctly in the WORKFLOW section and also set the autostart process for the appropriate kernel.
  • The processing options for the P4310 have to be set.  Go to the OVERRIDE Next Status and blank that option out.
  • Check to be sure your external email is set correctly.  Don’t forget to make sure your emails are not going to your JUNK or spam folder.

All the values italicized should be set with your appropriate information.

[WORKFLOW]
; Workflow Runtime Interop, inbound (server only)
WRIUser=JDE
WRIPassword=JDE
WRIEnvironment=PS812
WRIRole=*ALL

In order to test out also enable the following auto start process.  This will test the kernel accessing the system correctly.

[JDENET_KERNEL_DEF13]
krnlName=WORK FLOW KERNEL
dispatchDLLName=workflow.dll
dispatchDLLFunction=_JDEK_DispatchWFServerProcess@28

12-01-2008 Write off 100% of JD Edwards software or hardware purchases or leases this year with the new Section 179 deduction

  • Equipment (machines, etc) purchased for business use
  • Tangible personal property used in business
  • Business Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight in excess of 6,000 lbs
  • Computers
  • Computer Software (off the shelf)

Off-the-shelf computer software.   Off-the-shelf computer software placed in service during the tax year is qualifying property for purposes of the section 179 deduction. This is computer software that is readily available for purchase by the general public, is subject to a nonexclusive license, and has not been substantially modified. It includes any program designed to cause a computer to perform a desired function. However, a database or similar item is not considered computer software unless it is in the public domain and is incidental to the operation of otherwise qualifying software.

  • Office Furniture
  • Office Equipment
  • Property attached to your building that is not a structural component of the building (i.e.: a printing press, large manufacturing tools and equipment)
  • Partial Business Use (equipment that is purchased for business use and personal use – generally, your deduction will be based on the percentage of time you use the equipment for business purposes.)

Leasing and Section 179

Did you know that your company can lease equipment and still take full advantage of the Section 179 deduction? In fact, leasing equipment with the Section 179 deduction in mind is a preferred financial strategy for many businesses, as it can significantly help with not only cash flow, but with profits as well.

Non-Tax | Capital Lease

The main benefit of a non-tax capital lease is that you can still take full advantage of the Section 179 Deduction, yet make smaller payments. With a non-tax capital lease you can acquire and write off $250,000 worth of equipment this year, without actually spending $250,000 this year. A small business that is managing cash flow can leverage a non-tax capital lease and still take the Section 179 Deduction.

Examples of non-tax capital leases include a $1.00 Buyout, and a 10% Purchase Upon Termination (PUT) Lease. In many cases, the amount you save in taxes will be MORE than the total of your first year’s payments.

Equipment Financing

You may also obtain an equipment loan using an Equipment Finance Agreement (EFA) and still take the Section 179 Deduction.

Find more information at http://www.irs.gov/publications/p946/ch02.html or http://www.section179.org/index.html

11-26-2008  Computer Donations Needed

I had the pleasure of being on the High Point Community Foundation Grants Committee a couple of weeks ago. It is a daunting task to be on a board where your job is to determine who is going to receive grant funding and who is not. There are so many needy organizations and so little money to pass out, we ended up spending two days working to come to a decision on who would receive and who would go without. There were three proposals from worthy organizations who are looking to upgrade their technology, many are using computers and technology that is 8 to 10 years old. All of these received little or no funding in the grants process.

The Eternal Life Youth Ministry

Boys and Girls Clubs of High Point

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of High Point

All three organizations that focus on youth to provide increased access to academic, social, character building and learning experiences. They currently have an outdated computers and need to upgrade their equipment. Most of this equipment is too old to run any kind of newer software.

So again I am asking the business community to please let me know if your organization is planning on replacing any laptop or desktop computers. Any donation will go directly to help disadvantaged youth with these three organizations.

11-26-2008 New ROI Tool for JD Edwards Upgrades

Through a joint effort of IBM and JD Edwards a new tool has been created that gives you a Return on Investment (ROI) for doing a software upgrade. The tool allows you to put in the JDE version and hardware you are on. Then you can view the enhancements that exist in the version you are looking to upgrade to and determine whether they are things that would bring value to your organization. You can also weight the value for a particular feature or function based on how many employees it would affect. In the end the tool spits out an ROI dollar value to determine if an upgrade makes sense for you.

This type of tool certainly helps when you are justifying the upgrade to upper management. If you would like to see what kind of value your next JD Edwards upgrade can bring contact info@brij.net.

11-25-2008 JD Edwards – User Productivity Kit (UPK)

The User Productivity Kit (UPK Tool) greatly enhances user training and writing of test scripts for application testing and conference room pilot activities. The script may be written as part of normal unit testing activities by simply pressing the Print Screen key during data entry. The UPK Tool allows users to play back scripts in multiple modes, including a mode where users are tested on their ability to enter data, and graded on the number of correct and incorrect keystrokes. A variety of documentation can be published automatically in Microsoft Word or html documents, allowing the content to be viewed by users by viewing a document library or web pages.  Documents are built with a complete table of contents. Notes for instructors can be built into the scripts, with separate documents created for instructors and students. External documents and web pages can even be linked to the scripts. There are a variety of pre-built scripts available.
